Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes the loss of brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical messenger in the brain. Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder that is prevalent in the world. It is mostly seen in older people. However, there has been a shift in the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, affecting individuals under the age of 50. Parkinson’s and movement disorders require comprehensive attention and care, and Manipal Hospitals Mukundapur stands as a premiere facility in the management of Parkinson’s disease. With the help of advanced technologies and highly skilled medical professionals, our facility ensures that all patients diagnosed with movement disorders have access to quality care, treatment, and support during their journey. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease start at a gradual pace, with slight tremors in one hand. Along with tremors, slow movements, facial features lacking expression, muscle stiffness, reduced or impaired balance and coordination, and slurred speech are also noticed. The symptoms worsen as the disease progresses. Moreover, individuals with Parkinson’s disease may develop emotional changes, including depression, and may have constipation, drooling, problems while urinating, and/or trouble swallowing and chewing. While there is no permanent cure for Parkinson’s disease, certain treatment interventions aid in hindering the progress of the disease.
Since Parkinson’s disease is incurable, certain treatment interventions, such as medications, lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and surgery, such as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), help minimise the progression of the disease. Medications may include Levodopa, Dopamine Agonists, Monoamine oxidase B inhibitors (MAO B), catechol O-methyl transferase (COMT) inhibitors, apomorphine therapy, and anticholinergics. DBS is generally advised for individuals with advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease.
Deep Brain Stimulation, or DBS, is a surgical procedure that involves an implanted device that consists of electrodes placed on areas of the brain that show abnormal activity. These areas, which are responsible for motor control, are stimulated with these electrodes, which then modulate the activity of the brain. DBS is found to provide relief for patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease, especially for symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and slowed movement.
Parkinson’s disease arises due to the degeneration of neurons in the region of the brain that is focused on movement control, particularly the substantia nigra. Other movement disorders include Huntingdon’s disease and Rett syndrome, which are genetic disorders. Ataxia is characterised by impaired and clumsy movement. Dystonia is caused by involuntary muscle spasms that occur due to abnormal functioning of a part of the brain, i.e., the basal ganglia, which helps in the control and coordination of movement. The treatment of Parkinson’s and other movement disorders is different and tailored to individual needs.
Having a balanced diet and maintaining regular exercise can minimise the progression of the disease. Individuals with Parkinson’s disease may experience constipation and dehydration, and therefore, consuming fibre-rich food and plenty of water is necessary. Additionally, protein-rich foods can interfere with the absorption of carbidopa-levodopa medication, which is typically taken up by the small intestine. Therefore, it's advisable to consume a high-protein diet later in the day.
