Laminectomy is a surgical intervention employed to treat spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and achondroplasia, among others. The procedure involves removing all or a part of the lamina, a posterior portion of the vertebrae, to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve root. Most Laminectomy surgeries are performed for a duration of 1 to 3 hours; however, the recovery may take several weeks.
At the Spine Care Centre in Manipal Hospitals, Mukundapur, Kolkata, our spine surgeons perform the procedure under general or spinal anaesthesia. During the procedure, a small incision is made on the back, or the neck. After reflecting the muscle and ligament layers, the bone spurs, lamina, or disc fragments pressing against the nerve are removed. Additional spinal procedures are performed when necessary. Once the procedure is completed, all the layers are sutured back into position.
A Laminectomy is a major spine operation. Therefore, our doctors employ sophisticated tools and advanced techniques to minimise the risks associated with the procedure. Through the procedure, we help reduce the pain and tingling sensation the patient experiences in the back, legs, and arms. With us, you can be rest assured of a positive clinical outcome and a comforting experience.

When the vertebral disc gets displaced or damaged due to injury or wear, it presses on the spinal nerve and causes pain and numbness. The symptoms will be felt in the area where the nerve innervates, often in the arms and legs. If medical treatments are ineffective in treating herniated discs, the doctors advise a Laminectomy procedure.
Some of the conditions in which Laminectomy is recommended include:
Spinal Stenosis: Laminectomy is one of the treatments to address the narrowing of the spinal canal, or the procedure is part of a multi-step treatment.
Herniated Discs: The procedure helps treat a break in the outer layer of the disc, as a result of which the spinal nerve gets compressed from the leaked gel.
Degenerative Changes: The bony growths that form within the spinal canal due to wear and tear can be removed with a Laminectomy procedure.
Tumours: Abnormal growth that develops in the spinal canal and compresses the spinal nerve is removed through this procedure.
Laminectomy procedures also help with the following cases:
To ease pressure on the spinal nerves
To relieve back or neck pain that continues even after medical treatment
If the back pain is accompanied by spinal cord or nerve damage
Loss of bowel or bladder control due to pressure on the cervical or lumbar spine
The Laminectomy procedure can be performed as an open or minimally invasive procedure:
Open Laminectomy: An incision is made in the back, and specialised instruments are used to remove the lamina that has been compressing the spine.
Minimally Invasive Laminectomy: Various minimally invasive techniques, such as endoscopic procedures, are employed to remove the lamina with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue.
You must inform the doctors about all the medicines you take and your allergies. Some medications will have to be stopped to prevent adverse effects during surgery. Give up smoking at least two weeks before the procedure. Avoid eating and drinking just before surgery.
You will be monitored in the recovery room for a few hours post-surgery. You will be prescribed pain medication and discharged on the same day or a few days after the hospital stay. However, you must follow the doctor's instructions on post-surgery recovery. Avoid bending or performing strenuous activities for a few weeks after surgery.
Your symptoms of back pain will reduce after the Laminectomy procedure, which will help you lead an active, normal life. However, you must remember that problems related to your spine may not be completely cured or the permanent damage caused by long-term cord compression cannot be reversed.
Similar to other surgical procedures, the Laminectomy procedure also carries risks. Some of the common complications are:
Bleeding: The risk of bleeding is greater during or after the procedure.
Infection: You may develop an infection at the surgical site following the Laminectomy procedure.
Spinal Cord or Nerve Root Injury: Damage to the spinal cord or nerve root can cause persisting or worsening pain.
CSF leak: Sometimes during the procedure, the dura may be perforated, through which the CSF leaks out.
Formation of blood clots.
Allergic reaction to anaesthesia.
Our spine surgeons at Manipal Hospitals are adept at performing Laminectomy procedures with minimal risks. If you are concerned about the procedures, speak to our spine surgeons.
Laminectomy is one of the surgical procedures with a high success rate. The procedure helps improve functional movement and enhance the quality of life in individuals with spinal disorders. However, you must remember that the surgical outcomes will depend on the disease's severity and other medical conditions' presence.
Recovering from a surgical procedure is a gradual process. The time you take to recover from a Laminectomy procedure will depend on your general health, the type of anaesthesia administered, your age, and other factors. During the recovery phase, you may have to undergo physical therapy for faster healing.
You must have a regular follow-up after the Laminectomy procedure. If you experience any of the below symptoms, you must seek medical care right away:
