The most common method of addressing colorectal cancer is through surgery, which can range from minimally invasive procedures, such as removing a polyp during a Colonoscopy, to more extensive operations that may involve removing the entire colon in rare cases. Typically, surgery for colorectal cancer involves removing the tumours, the affected portion of the colon, surrounding tissue, and nearby lymph nodes. In addition to surgery, patients may also undergo Chemotherapy and/or Radiation Therapy before and/or after the procedure to reduce the size of any remaining tumours and specifically target any remaining cancer cells.
Before undergoing Colorectal Surgery, the colon must be thoroughly cleansed and emptied. This may require a bowel prep, regardless of whether a polyp is being removed during a Colonoscopy or if the surgeon is removing part of the tumour, colon, and/or rectum to treat colorectal cancer.

The many kinds of colorectal cancer operations are as follows:
Polypectomy: A colonoscopy procedure used to remove polyps.
Local Excision: The removal of a tiny portion of surrounding tissue together with the malignancy.
Colectomy: Removal of the colon, either whole or in part.
Proctectomy: The rectum is removed whole or in part.
Colostomy/Ileostomy: Making a stoma (opening) in the abdomen to allow waste to pass through.
Laparoscopic Surgery: Little incisions are used in this minimally invasive procedure.
After undergoing Colorectal Cancer Surgery, patients typically require a hospital stay of several days to a week during the recovery process. The length of time for complete recovery at home may vary from a few weeks to several months, depending on the extent of the surgery and the overall health of the patient. While light tasks can be resumed within a few weeks, it is recommended to refrain from heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for at least six weeks. To ensure a swift recovery, it is important to follow the precise instructions given by your surgeon.
