What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization also known as test tube babies is a process wherein the egg and sperm are fertilized outside the body in the incubator and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterine cavity of the mother.

The world’s first IVF baby, Louis Brown was born on the 25th of July 1978. Her mother, Leslie Brown, had bilaterally blocked fallopian tubes, and IVF was the only option. Since then, IVF /ICSI is also being done for women with very less eggs, older women, severe endometriosis, and for men with very low sperm count. Even men with no sperms (Azoospermia) can conceive by aspirating the sperms from the testes (tesa) and injecting it into the eggs (ICSI). Best fertility doctors in Mysore recommend IVF for couples with unexplained infertility (where eggs, sperm, and tubes are normal) and repeated failed Intra Uterine Inseminations (IUIs).

Steps Involved in IVF:

Initial assessment is screening the patients for any co-morbidity like thyroid, diabetes, and hypertension and correcting the same.

  • Controlled ovarian hyper stimulation when the woman has to take injections daily for follicular growth. This may vary from 8 to 12 days.

  • Ultrasound guided egg collection by aspirating the follicles under anesthesia.

  • The husband’s semen is collected, and ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection)/ IVF (In-vitro Fertilization) is done on the same day.

  • The resulting embryos can be transferred - fresh in the same cycle 3-5 days later. The embryos can be frozen and transferred at a later date too (segmentation of the IVF cycle )

  • Two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test (serum beta HCG) is done to confirm the pregnancy.

Advantages of the Procedure:

  • The likelihood of conceiving with IVF is significantly higher compared to natural conception or Intra Uterine Insemination’s (IUI’s).

  • Spare embryos can be frozen, and the couple can have a second/third child a few years later without having to undergo the whole procedure of injections and egg collection.

Risks involved:

  • Multiple pregnancies (twins and triplets) can occur, although all efforts are made to reduce their occurrence.

  • Ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome - fortunately the occurrence of OHSS has significantly reduced due to the segmentation of the IVF procedure.

Manipal Hospitals' reproductive medicine department is known to be the best IVF centre in Mysore because of the success rate in achieving the patient's desire, also the quality and care services offered.
