While the importance of Golden Hour is highly emphasised multiple times, it is favourably seen in trauma care centres. The trauma care centre is the part of ER which is highly dedicated to treating severe traumatic injuries that suddenly require immediate medical attention. Traumatic injuries are treated based on their severity level: low, moderate or severe. While ER handles emergencies from heart attacks, strokes and head injuries to sprained ankles, cuts and fractures, Trauma care centres are exclusively dedicated to patients who have undergone traumatic injuries such as gunshot wounds, major burns, severe car crash injuries, stabbing, vehicle collisions, etc.
What is the role of the trauma centre in ER?
The trauma care centre or Trauma Resuscitation Bay is the particular zone in ER where the patient is immediately assessed and treated to stabilise the condition during the golden hour. Highly specialised and trained trauma surgeons, nurse practitioners, trauma techs, respiratory therapists, trauma patient care associates, and other skilled trauma staff work round the clock to stabilise the patient’s condition and increase survival chances. Following the emergency assessment and treatment in the trauma care centre, the patients may be transferred to the radiology or operating room. Since every second after traumatic injury is precious to save patients’ lives, no other members are allowed for bedside visiting. However, your trauma team will contact you as soon as possible to update you on the patient’s condition. Book an appointment to have the best treatment.
Levels of Trauma Care Centre
Trauma centres provide more comprehensive care than ER; the difference between a trauma centre and ER can be life and death. Choosing a level 1 trauma centre can make a difference between life and death. While the US recognises five levels of trauma centres, India currently has three levels of trauma centres to accommodate a wide range of traumatically injured patients.
Level 1 Trauma Centres
From prevention through rehabilitation, total trauma care is provided by level 1 centres. 24X7 care and highly specialised general surgeons and professional doctors from a wide range of medical specialities take care of trauma patients. These trauma centres are crucial to the development of a healthy trauma care system at large.
Level 2 Trauma Centres
Similar to level 1 trauma centres, level 2 centres provide 24-hour immediate medical assistance combining the expertise of general and specialised surgeons from various departments like orthopaedic, radiology, neurosurgery, anaesthesiology, emergency medicine and critical care. While level 1 and level 2 treat both children and adult patients, level 2 might not necessarily provide teaching or research like level 1.
Level 3 Trauma Centre
Smaller than level 1 and level 2 centres, level 3 trauma centre provides prompt care to traumatically injured patients. These centres increase the chances of survival of trauma patients by stabilising them to transfer to a higher-level trauma centre. These level 3 centres also provide 24 hr coverage, timely assessment, resuscitation, surgery, stabilisation of injured patients, intensive care and emergency care. Emergency medicine physicians, general surgeons and anaesthesiologists provide immediate assistance in level 3 centres.
Three trauma centre levels are widely seen in India. There might be level 4 and level 5 trauma centres in foreign countries which offer trauma care, stabilisation and diagnostic evaluation before the patients are transferred to higher trauma level centres.
