A nerve graft is a segment of nerve fibres that bridges the space between two injured nerve endings. Because the graft is transplanted from one area to the next, a nerve grafting operation is occasionally referred to as a nerve transplant.
What problems are addressed by nerve graft surgery?
A nerve transplant can fix many kinds of peripheral nerve damage. The following common peripheral nerve disorders may call for nerve grafting:
Stretch, compression, or complicated sharp injuries (such as propeller and saw injuries) to a nerve segment, as well as trauma that leaves the ends of the torn nerve with significant scarring. Nerve grafting, either by itself or in conjunction with other types of treatments like nerve transfers, is frequently used to treat
1. Brachial plexus injuries.
2. Malignancies and tumours of the nerves
3. Facial immobility
Procedure
It Varies based on whether you are receiving an allograft or an autograft. The surgeon must remove a portion of the nerve from an autograft (your donor's nerve) before transplanting it to the new site. This stage often entails:
1. Provide general anaesthesia to ensure you don't experience any pain or discomfort.
2. Determining the donor nerve's course on your arm or leg, based on which nerve is selected.
3. Creating several tiny cuts along the nerve's course enables the physician to draw and recover it gently.
4. Cutting a required section of the donor's nerve.
5. Insert the donor nerve's terminals into neighbouring muscles to avoid the development of a painful neuroma or scar. Consult with our experts to have the best treatment.
The surgeon creates an incision near the affected nerve once the nerve transplant is prepared. The surgeon may have to cut away damaged or damaged nerve tissue before affixing the transplant, leaving a space in the nerve. After measuring and cutting the graft to the right length, the surgeon joins it to both extremities of the damaged nerve to fill the space. The surgeon may use threads (stitches) to join more prominent nerves to the graft or a specific adhesive to unite smaller nerves based on the diameter of the graft.
Post-Procedure
Most patients who have nerve transplant surgery can return home the same day or the next day. Before you depart, the doctor could immobilise the injured leg with a splint or cast, which you might have to wear for two to three weeks.
A nerve graft procedure may take several months before the injured area of the body begins to move and feel again. Since nerve fibres develop roughly an inch each month thanks to the nerve graft, it can take many months for the fibres to reach the tissue and skin that lost their nerve supply. To minimise stiffness and reinforce the muscles currently active, your surgeon will recommend therapy sessions. You could require extra exercise or occupational treatment to improve that muscle as it begins to rebuild when the nerve fibres enter the muscle that destroyed the nerve due to the injury.
