Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy Treatment in Mysore

This is a type of minimally invasive procedure that is carried out with the help of a bronchoscope. The bronchoscope is a flexible tube with a camera attached at one end. This tube is inserted inside the airways so that the pulmonologist can look within for any blockages. Any problems within the respiratory system, like the bronchi, trachea and throat, can be easily visualised through the camera at the front end of the bronchoscope. Bronchoscopy may also collect fluid (biopsy) or insert a stent within the airways for easy airflow.

Pre-Procedure

Before a bronchoscopy is done, some things to keep in mind are listed as follows.

  • Not eating or drinking anything the night before the procedure.

  • Avoiding certain medications such as blood thinners at least one week before the procedure.

  • Sometimes, Ibuprofen is prescribed to be taken about a week before the test.

  • Removing any attachments, such as contact lenses, dentures, hearing aids, etc., before the procedure.

  • The anaesthesia will not allow the patient to leave immediately after the procedure, and a few extra hours of hospital stay may be needed.

Procedure

The total time duration of the bronchoscopy may last from half an hour to about 2 hours. The patient will not be needed to spend the night in the hospital after the procedure. The different steps involved are listed below.

  • Once the patient lies down, a sedative is inserted intravenously to promote relaxation during the procedure.

  • For rigid bronchoscopy, general anaesthesia is administered not to feel the pain.

  • Sensors for detecting the pulse rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels in the blood are connected to the patient.

  • The pulmonologist then inserts the bronchoscope into the patient’s mouth or nasal cavity through the vocal cords and inside the airways. To know more, Consult with our experts at Manipal Hospitals.

  • The camera at the front end directs all the steps.

  • Fluid for biopsy may be collected, or tissue samples may be taken.

  • If a stent is to be inserted, the procedure may take some more time but s normally completed within 5 to 6 hours after the general anaesthesia wears off.

After the bronchoscopy, there will be a slight numbness for a few hours. Eating and drinking will be tedious, and the patient can start by drinking small sips of water. A liquid diet, like soups and juices, can be maintained for a day after the procedure. A sore throat may occur after the day of the bronchoscopy. The pulmonologist must treat any complications like excessive cough, fever, blood in the sputum, breathing problems, pain in the chest, etc.

Side effects of Bronchoscopy

Some side effects, like fever or chest cold, may progress to pneumonia if the patient is left untreated after developing the symptoms. In very rare situations, the patient can experience a collapsed lung. An X-ray may be needed to be done after the procedure if any complications arise. Supplemental oxygen may be needed in case of decreased oxygen levels. Visit Manipal Hospitals for bronchoscopy treatment in Mysore.
