Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)

Interstitial Lung Disease Treatment in Mysore

Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Disease (DPLD) or ILD is a cluster of more than 200 conditions in the form of lung scarring coupled with different degrees of inflammation. Shortness of breath, cough, fatigue and discomfort in the chest. Alveoli within the lungs are severely damaged, inhibiting oxygen transfer from the lungs onto the body.

ILD can be displayed in various forms, but the most common form is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Some are classified under ILD, such as asbestosis, silicosis, radiation pneumonitis, etc. Some connective tissue disorders, such as nonspecific interstitial pneumonia, are also classified under these diseases. Although the causes of ILD sometimes remain unknown in the case of idiopathic interstitial lung disease, some common causes are autoimmune conditions, occupational exposures and certain drugs. Autoimmune conditions, such as Sjogren syndrome, scleroderma, polymyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and sarcoidosis, are cases that can lead to scarring and inflammation within the lungs. Exposure to dust, coal, asbestos, and silica is also predisposing factor towards the disease. Drugs such as NSAIDs, antibiotics, heart treatment drugs, and chemotherapy drugs are also caused by ILD.

Treatment

Once scarring has already taken place within the lungs. Any treatment will only help stop any more scarring from occurring. There is no cure for the scarring that has already occurred. Exposure to occupational hazardous materials, such as asbestos dust, silica dust, and coal dust, has to be further avoided in case scarring occurs due to them. Some treatment options to consider are listed below.

  • Pulmonary rehabilitation.

  • Drugs that suppress the immune system will assist in stopping further scarring in the lungs.

  • Supplemental oxygen administration in case of decreased oxygen levels in the body.

  • Corticosteroid drugs like Predisone, which are anti-inflammatory, will help in decreasing the inflammation caused due to scarring.

  • Drugs like Nintedanib or Perfinidone are antifibrotic by nature and will inhibit more scarring of the lung tissues.

  • Autoimmune treatment drugs like Rituximab can also be used to treat ILD. To know more, Consult with our experts to have the best treatment

  • Gastro Esophagal Reflux Disease can worsen the symptoms of ILD, so drugs that will suppress the acid in the stomach are also helpful.

  • A lung transplant is the final option for those patients with severe scarring.

Complications

Some possible complications that may occur due to ILD are listed below.

  • Infections within the lungs.

  • Lung cancer.

  • Pulmonary hypertension or excessive blood pressure within the lungs.

  • Pneumothorax or lungs that have collapsed.

  • Respiratory failure or complete failure to breathe.

  • Heart failure, especially on the right side.

  • Venous thromboembolism or blood clots within the deeper veins of the body.

  • Children experience delayed growth.

Risk factors for ILD

  • Familial history: having a close blood relative with ILD can be a risk factor for getting the disease.

  • MUC5B is a gene that is connected to getting Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Having this gene implies the risk of getting ILD.

  • COVID-19 infection can pose a risk of weakening the lungs and acquiring ILD.

  • Smoking tobacco is a high-risk factor for ILD.

  • Occupational diseases such as exposure to various irritants are a big risk for ILD. Examples include mould, coal, asbestos, silica, POP, dust,  etc. Having construction or deep mining jobs can pose a huge risk for ILD. To know more, visit our pulmonology hospital in Mysore.
