Thoracoscopy Treatment in Mysore

A thoracoscopy is conducted to view the pleural spaces within the lungs and surface structures with the help of a thoracoscope. It is a minimally invasive procedure that helps the pulmonologist during some surgical procedures. This is known as Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery or VATS.

Reasons for Conducting VATS

The VATS procedure is useful for several reasons, such as listed below.

  • Detection of lung cancer types by removal of liquid samples or tissue samples. The samples are then sent for microscopic examination to confirm the same.

  • Removal of any excess fluid surrounding the lungs or pleural effusion.

  • Surgery to treat lung cancer.

  • Surgery to reduce the size or volume of lungs.

  • Esophagectomy or surgical removal of part of the oesophagus or complete removal.

  • Thymectomy or surgical removal of the Thymus gland.

  • Hyperhidrosis or surgical treatment to treat excessive sweating in the body.

  • Surgery that can treat a damaged oesophagus for easy flow of food into the stomach.

  • Surgery to treat hiatal hernia wherein the stomach lining gets pushed into the diaphragm into the chest.

  • Other surgeries involve the diaphragm, heart, and spine. To know more, visit our pulmonology hospital in Mysore.

How is a Thoracoscopy carried out?

  • Before the VATS procedure is carried out, any medications must be stopped a few days before.

  • On the day of the procedure, the patient is told not to eat or drink anything.

  • The minimum time duration for thoracoscopy is 30 minutes and can extend for some hours.

  • The person is sedated through the use of an IV injection.

  • The breathing is controlled with the help of a breathing pipe that supplies oxygen within.

  • The pulmonologist makes three different cuts of less than an inch width on the fourth, sixth and seventh ribs. Consult with our experts to have the best treatment.

  • The thoracoscope is inserted into the pleural space.

  • The other tools required for the surgery are inserted into the other 2 incisions.

  • The doctor withdraws any samples required.

  • May perform surgery if required.

  • The thoracoscope is withdrawn out carefully, along with the other tools.

  • A chest tube is then inserted inside the pleural space to extract any excess air out to reverse the collapsed lung.

  • The incisions are closed up expertly.

  • The patient is allowed to be conscious and breathe on his own.
