Manipal Hospitals' doctors have emphasised the signs of multiple myeloma. Myeloma is a kind of malignancy that affects plasma cells, which includes anaemia, bone discomfort, and decreased renal function. The doctors also used the occasion to debunk widespread misconceptions about the illness and iterated that a cancer diagnosis does not always spell death. Patients with multiple myeloma must undergo routine follow-up treatment since it is a malignancy that develops slowly and can be identified in one to three days. Many young individuals require bone marrow transplantation as part of their treatment. Nonetheless, multiple myeloma cannot be avoided by changing one's lifestyle.

How Do Genetic Factors Influence Oral Health
According to Dr. Sharon Colaco Dias, Prosthodontist and Implantologist and director of dental medicine at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, there is a connection between oral health and hereditary variables. Genetic factors can alter the quantities of proteins in the tooth, affecting the size, shape, and enamel colour. The inheritance of the defence response pattern may be an essential component in the development of gum disorders. To get the best results from gum treatment, identify genetic variables and understand how to change, regulate, or modulate the immune response. Environmental factors like intraoral functional constraints and oral habits impact dental arch variation from the early stages of organ development. Dr. Sharon recommends genetic consultation as part of dental treatment as genetic variations affect the levels of calcium and phosphorus in saliva, which is the structural unit of the tooth and may impact the dynamic interplay between the enamel surface and the oral cavity.

Dr. Nitin Yashas Murthy, Consultant, Medical Oncologist and Haemato oncologist at Manipal Hospitals, at the BW Healthcare World's Oncology Summit 2023, discussed the increasing prevalence of cancer in India, predicted to rise by 12–15% per year. Cancer is becoming increasingly prevalent at young ages and is more of a lifestyle disease. Cancer screening is crucial for detecting cancer, but it occasionally falls short since some cancers can be detected and diagnosed in the early stages. 90% to 70% of stage 1 to stage 3 cancers are curable, although it takes 3 to 4 years. Cancer survival rates are rising from weeks to years because of immunotherapy. The most advanced methods of determining which genes cancer cells express include oral tablets, gene sequencing, and targeted therapies, although chemotherapy remains the backbone of cancer treatment.

According to international statistics, almost two out of every three cancers are curable with modern treatment procedures. Dr Kakoli Lahkar, Medical Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, explained cancer survivorship refers to the physical, psychological, and socioeconomic aspects of life for those diagnosed and treated for cancer. With advancements in healthcare, the number of cancer survivors has grown significantly during the last three decades. The most common cancer among male cancer survivors is prostate cancer, followed by genitourinary malignancies and colorectal cancer. Among female survivors, the most diagnosed cancers are breast, gynaecological and colorectal cancer. Cancer survivors may have chronic fatigue syndrome, pain, trouble with physical function, hormone abnormalities, infertility, and radiation-induced secondary cancers. Lifestyle changes, rehabilitation programs, support groups, consultation with the doctor, research, and regular follow-ups can help manage the late effects of cancer.

An 82-year-old man suffering from a condition called mitral valve regurgitation was successfully treated using a non-invasive procedure and a mitraclip. According to Dr Ranjan Shetty, HOD and consultant-interventional cardiology, Manipal Hospitals, Old Airport Road, mitraclip was the only possible option to treat the condition in the patient as he had a decade-long history of heart complications and surgeries. Dr. Shetty also said that earlier open-heart surgery was the only treatment option for valve repair, but with advancements in interventional methods, the mitraclip procedure has emerged as a viable and less complicated option with a higher success rate. Thus, it is sure to become the norm for valve repair in future.

Dr. Ashish Dixit, Consultant – Haematology, Haemato Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplantation, Manipal Hospital, explains Chronic myeloid leukaemia is a rare type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow, where blood cells are made. Targeted therapy drugs, such as imatinib, dasatinib, and nilotinib, block the BCR-ABL gene and stop the abnormal myeloid cells from growing. It can bring the number of abnormal myeloid cells down to a normal level and keep the disease under control for a long time. The most commonly used targeted therapy drug for CML is imatinib, and dasatinib, nilotinib, and Bosutinib are newer-generation targeted therapy drugs. Thus, CML is no longer as scary as it seems because targeted therapy is a highly effective and relatively safe option for chronic myeloid leukaemia treatment.

The treatment period following a breast cancer diagnosis is a stressful experience for the patient and family. With that, it is a time to adopt new habits and a course of changes along the way while focusing on recovery. One significant step to reduce the risk of breast cancer is to eat healthily. Oncologists recommend a diet plan, high in fibre, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, for women suffering from breast cancer.
Nutrition plays an essential role in helping the body cope with the effects of cancer and its treatment. A balanced diet can reduce side effects (fatigue) and reduce recurrence risk by taking timely treatment. It helps maintain a healthy weight, improves the immune system, and benefits overall health.

Calcification in the coronary arteries is a sine qua non of the presence of atherosclerotic blocks or cholesterol deposits in the blood supply of the heart. Calcification can occur anywhere in the vascular system of the body, including the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart and brain. The most common cause of this is the duration of the cholesterol block itself, as the chronicity of the atherosclerotic process continues to increase and the calcification of that atherosclerotic block becomes very high.
Why Coronary Artery Calcification (CAC) is common in men?
CAC is a cholesterol blockade of the artery. This condition is more prevalent in men because most have risk factors for developing atherosclerotic cholesterol deposits in the blood supply like hypertension, diabetes, smoking, etc. In addition, the likelihood of calcification or cholesterol deposits increases dramatically with age.
