Tracheostomy can be defined as an airway management procedure that is accomplished by cutting a straight passage to your windpipe from the front of your neck. This helps to facilitate easier breathing when the normal respiratory pathway is obstructed. In cases when a patient's airways are restricted, an emergency tracheostomy is performed that allows a tube to go directly from a ventilator to the patient's windpipe through a precise incision on the neck. The procedure allows the patient to breathe while other diagnostic approaches and treatments are considered. A tracheostomy may be the long-term fix for certain patients suffering from breathing disabilities due to trauma or accidents.
A tracheotomy is usually performed under general anaesthesia in an operating room. There are two surgical options - Tracheostomy surgery and Percutaneous tracheotomy, and one of the two is selected according to the specific case of a patient.
The first option is tracheostomy surgery, in which the surgeon makes a horizontal cut at the lower part of your neck. They move aside the nearby muscles and take out a small part of the thyroid gland, revealing the trachea (windpipe). A tracheostomy hole is then created near the base of your neck on the windpipe.
Percutaneous tracheotomy is another technique that is less invasive and generally performed by making a small incision at the base of the front neck. Using special lenses to look inside the throat, the surgeon inserts a needle into the trachea to create the tracheostomy hole, which is then expanded to fit the tube. In both cases, a tracheostomy tube is placed through the hole. To stop the tube from falling out, a neck strap is attached to the faceplate. Temporary sutures may be used to secure the faceplate to the skin of your neck.
