Amniocentesis is a prenatal test (performed in pregnant women) to detect any genetic or chromosomal problems in the unborn baby. Amniocentesis can be performed from 16 weeks of pregnancy and even later on in pregnancy. A small amount of amniotic fluid (less than one ounce) is removed through a fine needle inserted into the uterus (womb) through the abdomen, under ultrasound guidance. 
Amniocentesis can identify various health problems in the developing fetus, such as:
