Benign lesions in the head and neck region can involve any of the following: skin, salivary glands, lymph nodes, and soft tissue. Although non-cancerous, these lesions may be noticed because of discomfort, aesthetic concern, or functional impairment, depending on the size and location. Cysts, lipomas, vascular malformations, and pleomorphic salivary gland adenomas are common benign conditions. Lesions that are enlarging, symptomatic, or compressing surrounding structures require surgical removal.
It is a meticulous excision, preserving surrounding nerves, blood vessels, and essential structures. Imaging studies such as ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans are done as pre-surgical evaluation in conjunction with fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for accurate diagnosis. Depending on the location, size, and nature of the benign lesion, robotic and endoscopic head and neck surgery may be performed.
Small, deeply situated benign salivary gland tumors might be approached with robotic assistance, while certain cysts or vascular malformations in the nasal or sinus cavities could be effectively removed through endoscopic head and neck surgery. This allows for smaller incisions, reduced scarring, and potentially faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery. The choice between minimally invasive and traditional approaches depends on the specific characteristics of the lesion and the patient's individual needs.
The recovery is usually quick and postoperatively, and care is focused on wound healing, infection control, and function preservation. Timely intervention ensures that the best possible results are achieved and the potential for recurrence or complications is lessened.
