Thyroid Surgery
Minimally invasive thyroid surgery procedure
The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck. It produces thyroid hormones that regulate metabolism and calcium, which are important to the human body. Surgical indications for thyroid disorders include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, large goitres, hyperfunctioning nodules, and suspected or confirmed thyroid cancer. The treatment depends on the diagnosis and may consist of a total thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland in its entirety) or a hemithyroidectomy (anterior resection of one lobe). The procedure must be precise so as not to harm the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which controls the vocal cords, and the parathyroid glands, which maintain calcium levels. Ultrasound, thyroid function tests, and, if necessary, a biopsy are the usual preoperative assessment.
