Transitional Care for Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)

Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) is primarily observed in premature infants due to a lack of surfactant in their lungs, leading to challenges in breathing shortly after birth. Transitional care for RDS seeks to bridge this gap, ensuring infants gradually adapt to regular lung function.

Initially, supplemental oxygen is given to these infants. This is usually through gentle means like nasal prongs or masks. In more severe situations, mechanical ventilation might be introduced, or artificial surfactants could be administered to help the lungs function more effectively. Continuous monitoring is essential throughout this phase to ensure the baby remains stable and any respiratory changes are addressed promptly.

Over time, as the baby's lungs begin to produce more surfactant naturally, there's a reduced dependency on external support.
