For children with troubled breathing, PICU provides various respiratory (breathing) support which are either invasive or non-invasive. Invasive respiratory care involves tracheostomy care and endotracheal intubation. Non-invasive respiratory support includes the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP), and/or high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC).
In most cases, doctors prefer non-invasive respiratory support over invasive respiratory support because it is less invasive and more comfortable for the child. However, sometimes invasive respiratory support becomes necessary for some children, especially when they develop ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) or severe respiratory failure.
