Central line and chemo port use
In some cancer patients, chemotherapy is safely delivered through a standard (or “peripheral”) IV line. Other times, infusions must be administered through a central line catheter, such as a PICC, CVC or port.
Why choose Manipal Hospital
Manipal Hospitals’ comprehensive cancer care unit is equipped with premium chemotherapy facilities including a central line and ports for the convenience and comfort of cancer patients and survivors. A port is a catheter that’s implanted surgically under the skin on the chest. It’s another type of central line.
Solutions in central line and chemo port
Chemotherapy is delivered safely through: a peripheral IV line which is a short catheter that’s typically placed in the forearm. It starts and ends in the arm itself; peripherally inserted central-line catheter is a longer catheter that’s also placed in the upper arm. Its tip ends in the largest vein of the body, which is why it’s considered a central line; a central venous catheter is placed in the chest or neck; and a port.
Complexities in central line and chemo port
Infection is the greatest risk of a central line, with other risks including a collapsed lung. Thrombosis can develop as a complication of a port line in oncologic patients and in non-oncology patients.
Number of cases
Since these therapies are part of the cancer treatment strategy, we have performed over 10 lakh central line and chemo port sessions.
Infection control protocol
With infections being a high risk of both chemotherapy sessions it is pertinent to protect cancer patients from potential risks. We have strict infection control norms in place for patients recuperating from the chemotherapy sessions.
