Holter Procedure in Salt Lake

Overview

  • A Holter monitor is a small, ambulatory, wearable electrocardiography device that monitors heart rhythms and records heartbeats.

Pre Procedure

  • Heart rhythm monitoring with the help of a Holter monitor is a planned outpatient procedure.

  • The patient is advised to take a shower before the procedure as most monitors cannot be removed and must be kept dry during monitoring.

  • There are no food or dietary restrictions before the procedure.

  • The patient must take a proper meal before the procedure.

  • Male patients are advised to shave off excessive chest hair to ensure that the electrodes are placed properly.

During Procedure

  • Holter monitoring is generally recommended for a period of 24 to 48 hours. It is a non-invasive and painless procedure.

  • The patient will be moved to an area where their privacy will be respected throughout the procedure.

  • The patient will be then given a gown for changing into before the device attachment procedure begins.

  • Female technologists will manage and perform the procedure on female patients.

  • The gel will be applied by the technologist to the patient’s chest area where electrodes have to be placed.

  • These electrodes are fixed on the chest with an adhesive or plaster.

  • The electrodes will be connected to a recording device with the help of several wires by the technologist, who will then instruct the patient on how to wear the recording device properly so that it can record the data produced from the electrodes. The size of the recording device is similar to that of an AA+ battery.

  • The additional gel is wiped off by the technologist with tissues and cotton to avoid discomfort.

  • The patient can hide the electrodes and the wires under their clothes. The patient is strictly advised to not take off the Holter monitor once monitoring starts. The monitor must be worn at all times, even when the patient is sleeping.

  • The patient can perform their routine activities while wearing the Holter monitor. The monitor is usually worn for a period of 24 to 48 hours.

  • The monitor may feel prickly and slightly uncomfortable at the site where the plaster is applied.

Post-Procedure

  • The patient is advised to wear loose clothing and undergarments after the monitor attachment procedure to avoid friction with the device.

  • The Holter monitor must be kept dry at all times.

  • The patient must not go for a swim or take a bath while wearing the Holter monitor.

  • Avoid magnets, metal detectors, microwave ovens, X-rays and PET scans while wearing the Holter monitor as these devices can interrupt the signal emitted from the electrodes.

  • Mobile phones must be kept at least 6 inches away from the monitor as these devices can interrupt the signal emitted from the electrodes.

  • After the monitoring period is over, the patient will have to come back to the OPD with a prior appointment to get the electrodes removed. The patient can then hand over the device to the technologist.

  • The report will be shared with the patient at the reception 3 hours post the detachment of the device.
