Dr. Nitin Yashas Murthy on Immunotherapy and Targeted Therapy Changing the Landscape of Survival in Oncology | BW Healthcare World
Dr. Nitin Yashas Murthy, Consultant, Medical Oncologist and Haemato oncologist at Manipal Hospitals, at the BW Healthcare World's Oncology Summit 2023, discussed the increasing prevalence of cancer in India, predicted to rise by 12–15% per year. Cancer is becoming increasingly prevalent at young ages and is more of a lifestyle disease. Cancer screening is crucial for detecting cancer, but it occasionally falls short since some cancers can be detected and diagnosed in the early stages. 90% to 70% of stage 1 to stage 3 cancers are curable, although it takes 3 to 4 years. Cancer survival rates are rising from weeks to years because of immunotherapy. The most advanced methods of determining which genes cancer cells express include oral tablets, gene sequencing, and targeted therapies, although chemotherapy remains the backbone of cancer treatment.

The high pressure lowers the flow of filtered blood into the heart's left side and to other organs and causes right ventricular failure, which occurs as water blockage in the legs, lungs, and abdomen. It causes birth defects, clots, long-standing asthma, left-side heart valve problems, and joint problems. It can be diagnosed by 2D-Echocardiography, and medicines relieve symptoms and also increase the chances of survival. Early detection and treatment of birth abnormalities are critical. The use of blood thinners can prevent deadly complications in this condition.

A combination of genetics, environmental triggers, and the immune system can cause parts of the intestine i kids to get inflamed leading to IBD that lasts a long time.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic ailment of the intestine. It can occur both, in adults and children. Nearly 25% of all patients with IBD fall in the paediatric age group. It is associated with prolonged inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract, affecting one or both the intestines together. In this condition, the body’s immune system starts attacking the intestinal tissue and causes ulcers, swelling, inflammation, and other issues. A few decades ago, IBD was a very rare condition. However, there has been an increase in the incidence of IBD since the Covid-19 pandemic. While only about one case of IBD per year used to be reported earlier, now doctors are witnessing one to two cases in the paediatric age group every month.
As IBD is an auto-immune disorder where the immune system damages the intestine, the body’s immunity goes haywire, and the immune system starts attacking the intestine. Along with immunity, it may also be driven by multiple factors, such as genetics, environmental factors (modern diet and lifestyle), nutritional deficiency, and changes in the gut microbiome.
Prevention
Since this condition originated during industrialisation in western Europe, it is believed to be heavily influenced by modern lifestyles and eating habits, especially the increased consumption of processed foods. Thus, avoiding processed foods and opting for a healthy diet rich in nutrients can help lower the risk of IBD in children. In addition, leading a physically-active life is necessary to keep oneself healthy and away from not only IBD but also other diseases. Even though there is no permanent cure for IBD, children can still live a life of good quality by being aware of all aspects of preventing IBD and following the doctor’s recommended treatment plan.

A two-and-a half-year-old Bengaluru boy was left with a dent in his skull and hampered mobility after a coconut fell on his head from a 20-ft palm tree a few days ago. However, he is now back to his normal self after un dergoing surgery.
Thiru (name changed) was playing with his cou- sins in the front yard of his house in Sarjapur when the coconut landed on him on December 22 night. Anitha (name changed) ran to her son's help and fo und him in severe pain. He had no strength in his right leg and could not stand, walk or sit.
The boy was conscious. but doctors noticed he had no movement on his hip knee and ankle. "It is unu sual for children below 14 years of age- whose bo nes are more elastic than adults to show weakness in the leg due to a fracture," said Dr Veeresh U Mathad, consultant neuro and spl ne surgeon, neuro-endovascular surgeon and stroke interventionist, Manipal Hospitals.
