Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)

PTCA treatment in Sarjapur Road, Bangalore

PTCA, also known as angioplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat the narrowing of the coronary arteries. The goal of the procedure is to improve blood flow to the heart muscle. PTCA is typically performed using a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) that is inserted into an artery in the groin or arm. The catheter is then threaded through the artery to the heart. Once in place, a balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated, widening the artery and improving blood flow. PTCA is usually performed as an outpatient procedure and takes about an hour to complete. Recovery time is typically short, and most people can return to their normal activities within a few days.

It is a safe and effective procedure with a low risk of complications. The most common complication is bleeding at the site of the catheter insertion. Other potential complications include heart attack, stroke, and kidney damage. If you have coronary artery disease, your doctor may recommend PTCA as a treatment option. The decision to undergo PTCA is typically based on the severity of your disease and your response to other treatments, such as lifestyle changes and medication. Visit our cardiology hospital in Bangalore for the best treatment.

Before the procedure

  • Before having a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), your doctor will do a physical exam and ask you about your medical history. He or she may also order tests, such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or a coronary angiogram.

  • During an EKG, sensors placed on your chest record the electrical activity of your heart. An angiogram is an X-ray of your heart's arteries. It can show if there are blockages in your coronary arteries.

  • If your doctor thinks you would benefit from a PTCA, he or she will refer you to a cardiologist. A cardiologist is a doctor who specialises in heart conditions.

  • At your appointment, the cardiologist will review your medical history and test results. He or she will also explain the procedure and answer any questions you have.

  • Before having a PTCA, you will need to sign a consent form. This form says that you understand the risks of the procedure and agree to have it done.

  • The risks of a PTCA include bleeding, infection, and damage to the artery. In rare cases, a blood clot can form and cause a heart attack.

  • You will need to fast for at least six hours before the procedure. This means you cannot eat or drink anything, including water.

  • When you arrive at the hospital, a nurse will start an IV in your arm. This IV will give you fluids and medicine to help you relax.

Procedure

  • You will be taken into the procedure room and asked to lie on a table. The table will be tilted so that your head is lower than your feet.

  • A nurse will clean the area where the catheter will be inserted and give you a local anaesthetic. This will numb the area, and you will not feel any pain.

  • The cardiologist will make a small cut in your skin and insert a long, thin tube called a catheter into an artery in your leg. He or she will then guide the catheter through your arteries to the blocked coronary artery.

  • Once the catheter is in place, the cardiologist will inflate a balloon at the tip of the catheter. This will widen the artery and improve blood flow.

  • In some cases, a stent, or metal mesh tube, may be placed in the artery to help keep it open.

After the procedure

  • After the procedure, the catheter will be removed and the incision in your skin will be closed with stitches.

  • You will be taken to a recovery room to rest for a few hours. You may have a slight bruise where the catheter was inserted.

  • You will likely be able to go home the same day as the procedure. Your doctor will give you instructions on how to care for the incision and what to expect. Book an appointment to have the best treatment.

  • You will need to take it easy for a few days and avoid strenuous activity. You should also avoid driving for at least 24 hours.

  • Your doctor will likely prescribe medication, such as aspirin, to help prevent blood clots. They may also recommend making lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and eating a healthy diet.
