Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a type of surgery that is performed to relieve angina and reduce the risk of death from coronary artery disease. The surgery involves taking a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body and using it to bypass (detour around) a blocked section of a coronary artery. CABG is usually performed when coronary artery disease has progressed to the point where one or more of the major arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle is so narrow that they can no longer meet the heart's needs. CABG can also be performed to treat a coronary artery that has been significantly damaged by a heart attack. The goal of the surgery is to improve blood flow to the heart muscle and relieve symptoms such as angina. CABG is considered a major surgery and is usually performed using general anaesthesia. The surgery usually takes 3-6 hours but can occasionally take longer. Most people who have CABG surgery stay in the hospital for 7-10 days. Recovery from the surgery takes several weeks. It is important to follow the instructions of your surgeon and care team to help ensure a successful recovery.
Pre-procedure for Coronary artery bypass grafting
Patients typically undergo a coronary angiogram to assess the blockages in the coronary arteries.
The surgeon will then review the results of the angiogram with the patient and develop a surgical plan.
Patients will undergo a pre-operative evaluation which may include additional tests such as a stress test, echocardiogram, or cardiac MRI.
Patients will be asked to fast for 8-12 hours before the surgery.
Medications such as blood thinners will be stopped a few days prior to surgery.
Patients will be asked to shower with an antiseptic soap the night before or the morning of surgery.
Procedure for Coronary artery bypass grafting
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes about 3-4 hours. During the surgery, the heart is beating, and the patient is on a heart-lung machine, which does the work of the heart and lungs. The section of the blood vessel is taken from the chest, leg, or arm and is attached above and below the blockage in the coronary artery. Post-procedure
After coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), patients will be taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) for monitoring. They will remain intubated and on a ventilator overnight. The next morning, the medical team will assess the patient's condition and decide whether to extubate them. If the patient is extubated, they will be taken to a regular hospital room.
The first few days after CABG is the most critical. The patient will be closely monitored for any complications, such as bleeding, infection, arrhythmias, and heart failure. The chest incision will be checked for signs of infection. The patient will also be given blood thinners to prevent clotting.
As the patient recovers, they will be slowly transitioned to a regular diet and will be encouraged to walk around. Physical therapy will help the patient regain their strength. The patient will be discharged when they are able to care for themselves and are not at risk for complications.
