Laparoscopic Appendectomy and Hernia Repair

General surgery treatment in Sarjapur Road, Bangalore

Laparoscopic appendectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the appendix. A small incision is made in the navel, and a laparoscope is inserted. The laparoscope is a long, thin tube with a light and camera at the end. The camera sends images to a monitor in the operating room, and the surgeon uses these images to guide the removal of the appendix.

Hernia repair is a surgical procedure to repair a hernia. A hernia is a bulge or protuberance of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening in the body. Hernias can occur in the abdominal wall, the groin, or the diaphragm. The most common type of hernia is an abdominal hernia, which can be repaired surgically.

Why is the procedure performed?

Laparoscopic appendectomy and hernia repair are both minimally invasive surgical procedures. The main reason to perform either of these procedures laparoscopically is to minimise the amount of trauma to the patient. Laparoscopic appendectomy is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open appendectomy. The main advantage of laparoscopic appendectomy over open appendectomy is that the former results in less postoperative pain and a shorter hospital stay.

In addition, laparoscopic appendectomy has a lower risk of wound infection and hernia formation. Laparoscopic hernia repair is also a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open hernia repair. The main advantage of laparoscopic hernia repair over open hernia repair is that the former results in less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay, and a lower risk of wound infection. Pre-procedure preparations:

There are several pre-operative steps that must be completed prior to a laparoscopic appendectomy or hernia repair.

  • The patient must first be evaluated by a surgeon to determine if they are a candidate for the procedure. This evaluation will include a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. If the surgeon determines that the patient is a good candidate for the procedure, they will then schedule a pre-operative appointment.

  • At the pre-operative appointment, the surgeon will review the procedure with the patient and answer any questions that they may have. The surgeon will also obtain informed consent from the patient.

  • The patient will then be given a pre-operative checklist to complete. This checklist will help to ensure that the patient is ready for the procedure.

  • On the day of the procedure, the patient will be asked to arrive at the hospital or surgery centre early. They will be asked to change into a surgical gown and will be given an IV. The patient will then be taken to the operating room, where the procedure will be performed.

Procedure:

Laparoscopic Appendectomy

  • A small incision is made in the lower abdomen, and a laparoscope (a small telescope) is inserted.

  • The laparoscope is used to view the appendix and the surrounding area.

  • Other small incisions are made in the abdomen, and special instruments are inserted.

  • The appendix is removed through one of the small incisions.

  • The incisions are closed with stitches or staples, and a bandage is applied.

Hernia Repair

  •  A small incision is made in the groin area.

  • The hernia is pushed back into the abdomen.

  • The opening in the abdominal wall is closed with stitches or staples.

  • The incisions are closed with stitches or staples, and a bandage is applied.

 After procedure:

  • After a laparoscopic appendectomy or hernia repair, your surgeon will make a few small incisions in your lower abdomen. A thin, lighted tube called a laparoscope will be inserted through one of these incisions. The laparoscope will allow your surgeon to see your appendix or hernia.

  • Next, your surgeon will insert surgical instruments through the other incisions. These instruments will be used to remove your appendix or repair your hernia.  Book an appointment today for a consultation.

  • Once your appendix or hernia has been removed or repaired, your surgeon will close the incisions with stitches or staples. A small drain may be placed in one of the incisions.

  • You will be taken to a recovery room where you will be closely monitored. You will likely stay in the hospital overnight. You can expect some pain and discomfort after the surgery.

  • Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to help you manage this pain. You will need to take it easy for a few weeks after the surgery.

  • Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting. You should be able to return to your normal activities within four to six weeks.
