These congenital disorders impact facial appearance and function. Surgery is often performed to close the split (or "cleft"), enhancing facial appearance and improving speech and eating capabilities.
For a cleft lip, an incision is made on either side of the cleft to create flaps of tissue that are then drawn together and stitched to close the cleft. In a cleft palate repair, tissue from the sides of the cleft or from elsewhere in the mouth may be used to bridge the gap in the roof of the mouth.
