Headache is one of the commonest symptoms that are most visible in OPD. There are different types of headaches, and those are classified into two different categories: primary headaches and secondary headaches. Though research is still going, the reason behind Primary headaches is still unknown, whereas secondary headaches are related to some secondary factors, such as it can be secondary to hypertension, brain tumours, strokes, blood clots in the brain, etc. So, it has been concluded that secondary headaches are dangerous and need more attention. Primary headaches are usually disabling. They may affect the quality of life but do not cause any threat to life. Migraine is one of the most common types of primary headaches. Most general people have a basic understanding of what a migraine is, but they do not have an idea of how to identify it. To explain it more simply, a migraine is a one-sided headache; either it is a left-sided or right-sided headache, and it is associated with a throbbing sensation. People who suffer from migraine become extremely sensitive to light and sound which is known as photophobia and phonophobia. Along with that, during migraine pain, some people do not even prefer to move their heads; they prefer to sit in a silent room.

The Common Triggers of Migraine

During this time, the body is sensitive to certain things, and the most common trigger for migraine pain is reported to be travel. Other than that, for some people, hunger is the cause of migraines. If they are not having food at the proper time, they are more prone to getting headaches. Another common trigger point for migraines is dehydration. For some people, alcohol intake can be the cause of migraines as well. Some other possible migraine triggers are as follows:

  • Sleep Cycle: One of the most frequent variables associated with migraine is sleep disturbance. Acute migraine attacks are frequently associated with inadequate sleep. Another frequently cited trigger is getting too much sleep.

  • Food and Beverage Consumption: Numerous foods that contain significant amounts of the amino acid tyramine, such as fermented, cured, and pickled foods, are widely cited as potential migraine triggers. 60% of people claim that particular foods cause migraine headaches. On the other hand, according to some experts, drinking too much coffee might cause migraines. Therefore, it's a good idea to keep an eye on caffeine intake and avoid beverages like coffee, tea, soft drinks, and energy drinks that contain more caffeine.

  • Overuse of Medication: One of the main causes of migraines is the overuse of medication. In particular, for those who overuse typical analgesics, or painkillers, there may be an increased risk of turning infrequent headaches into chronic migraines.

  • Strong Smell: Strong or strange smells are usually cited as migraine sufferers' primary triggers. In particular, perfume is frequently mentioned as a trigger. Additionally, during attacks, roughly 50% of migraine sufferers report intolerance to odours.

Prevention of Migraine

The diagnosis of migraine is almost similar to identifying the cause of the primary headache. The MRI or brain imaging in both cases seemed to be normal, and all the blood reports were found to be normal. So, it can be said that a migraine is a type of allergy for a person that gets triggered for a certain reason. The prevention of migraines includes identifying the reason behind the pain and avoiding the triggers. For some people, the trigger can be easily understandable, but for others, they need to have a clear focus on the reason for understanding the trigger point for the same. Medication is also available for migraines, which basically optimizes the effectiveness and severity of the migraine pain according to the type of work they do. The type of medication, as well as the dosage of the medication, differs from person to person according to the severity of the migraine pain.
