Haemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder that can cause inadequate blood clotting, resulting in spontaneous or post-surgery bleeding. Haemophiliacs have low levels of factor VIII or factor IX, clotting proteins found in the blood. Women with haemophilia can experience severe menstrual bleeding and experience complications during menstruation, labour, and childbirth. Medications like desmopressin or tranexamic acid can be used to treat excessive menstrual bleeding. Factor VIII or IX concentrate infusions are necessary for extremely heavy menstrual bleeding, and hormonal intrauterine devices or endometrial balloon tamponade can be used if these treatments are unsuccessful. Women with haemophilia must seek regular checkups with a haematologist or gynaecologist if they experience discomfort or unusual bleeding during their menstrual cycle. With proper care, a balanced diet, and iron supplements, women with haemophilia can control their disease and have active, healthy lives.
