"Interventional Radiology" (IR) is a specialised field in radiology where image guidance is used to perform a wide range of minimally invasive imaging procedures. These procedures are performed to treat tumours, taking biopsy samples from tumours, placing stents, control or prevent abnormal bleeding, etc. These procedures are performed in a Cath-Lab. Examples of imaging modalities used to perform these procedures include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT) scan, ultrasound and fluoroscopy.
Interventional radiology procedures are mostly minimally invasive procedures performed through a tiny incision. Compared to the traditional open surgeries, these procedures are equally effective, less risky, less painful, offers speedy recovery, shorter hospitalization, with improved outcomes.
Some common imaging techniques used by Interventional radiologists while performing interventional procedures include x-ray, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, computerized tomography (CT) scan, and occasionally magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Before an interventional radiology procedure, inform your doctor about all the medications, your medical history, recent infections, illness, surgery, etc. Women should inform their doctor if they are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Make sure you follow all the instructions given to you by your doctor about the type of medications and diet to be taken before the procedure. Make sure to arrange for someone to drive you back home after the procedure and arrange for help at home for a couple of days or until you feel better. Interventional Radiologists will give you instructions specific to your procedure.
