TIPS is a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt procedure that is used to treat internal bleeding in the esophagus or stomach, for patients with cirrhosis. Imaging is used during the procedure to guide the insertion of a catheter into the hepatic vein, which is then advanced into the portal vein in the liver. A metal device known as a stent will be deployed at this junction to hold the connection open, allowing blood flow from the bowel to circulate back to the heart and bypass the liver, thereby reducing pressure in the portal vein and preventing further complications associated with cirrhosis.
