Understanding The Health Risks Associated With Unkempt Mattress
According to Dr Kiran Chouka, Consultant, Orthopedic Joint Replacement and Arthroscopic Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, an unkempt mattress can pose serious health risks, from triggering allergies and symptoms of asthma to exacerbating respiratory issues. Over time, mattresses can accumulate dust, dead skin cells, dust mites, bacteria, and fungi can cause respiratory problems, allergies, skin irritation and other serious health complications. Also, an unkempt mattress can harbour bed bugs, which can cause uncomfortable bites and transmit diseases. A poor mattress is a major reason for chronic low back pain. Orthopaedic mattresses are firm enough to support the back in good posture and prevent long-term health complications. To reduce the health risks associated with an unkempt mattress, it is necessary to clean and maintain it regularly, invest in an anti-bacterial, anti-dust mite and anti-allergenic properties mattress and replace it every 7–10 years.

If not detected and treated early, it can lead to end-stage myeloma and cause organ damage. A comprehensive workup includes BMA, a urine test for monoclonal protein, cytogenetics by FISH, FLC, and imaging for skeletal lesions is required for an accurate diagnosis. Treatment includes induction therapy with 2-3 drugs and maintenance therapy interspersed with BMT for patients. The signs of end-stage myeloma are severe fatigue, bony pains, renal failure, immobility of the legs and infections. The comprehensive therapy for end-stage myeloma involves the primary treatment of multiple myeloma with multiple drugs simultaneously to destroy the cancerous plasma cells. If detected and treated early, multiple myeloma can be defeated.
