The Active Breath Hold Controller (ABC) is like a special tool that helps make sure a tumour doesn't move too much when someone is breathing during radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is a treatment where high-energy rays are used to target and treat tumours. But, when someone breathes, their insides move a bit, and that movement can affect how precise the radiation treatment is. To tackle this issue, the Active Breath Hold controller is used.
The Active Breath Hold Controller (ABC) treatment starts with a formal assessment during CT simulation, allowing you to become familiar with the ABC apparatus. The familiarisation process for adults and young adults includes demonstrations, for very young children support from play specialists may also be required. The ABD device consists of a mouthpiece, filter, and balloon valve. It is used to control your breathing during radiotherapy for thorax or abdomen treatment. Young individuals undergo a longer CT appointment for training, but generally for adult patients no additional modifications for adults. During treatment, you are positioned supine (on your back) and immobilised, and notably, thermoplastic shells aren't used for lower neck treatment due to impracticality. The breath-hold procedure involves assessing your breathing patterns, setting the valve threshold, and monitoring breath-holding using the ABC device. During the practice session, the operator checks if you can follow the instructions properly. You will hold your breath once while they take a CT image. This helps them plan your treatment very accurately.
