Brachytherapy is a specialised technique involving the strategic positioning of radioactive material either inside or next to a tumour. Instead of using high-energy X-ray beams from the outside, like in traditional radiation treatment, brachytherapy puts radioactive material right inside or close to the tumour. It plans the treatment using 3D images, making sure it hits the right spots and keeps the patient at the centre of the action.
In permanent brachytherapy, needles containing radioactive seeds are directly inserted into the tumour through a specific process. Subsequently, the doctor removes the needles, leaving the radioactive seeds in place. Alternatively, a different approach involves using a device that inserts seeds individually at regular intervals. Medical imaging may be employed during the procedure to ensure precise seed placement. Following implantation, additional imaging tests may be conducted by the doctor to confirm the accurate positioning of the seeds. During temporary brachytherapy, a catheter, needle, or applicator is inserted into or placed close to the tumour. Medical imaging aids in the location of radiation sources. The cancer care specialists may put the delivery device into a bodily cavity, such as the vagina or uterus. Alternatively, an applicator (catheter or needle) may be inserted by the physician into the interstitial space of the body.
