The parathyroid glands are four small, pea-shaped glands in the neck, placed on either side of the trachea (the major airway) and close to the thyroid gland. In most situations, each side of the trachea has two glands, an inferior and a superior gland. There may be fewer than four or more than four glands present, and a gland(s) may be in an uncommon place. The parathyroid glands' job is to create parathyroid hormone (PTH), a hormone that aids in calcium regulation in the body.
A parathyroidectomy is the surgical removal of one or more parathyroid glands to treat hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism is a disorder where the parathyroid glands create an abnormally high amount of PTH. When there is an excess of PTH, calcium is taken from the bones and enters the blood, and calcium absorption from the intestine into the blood is enhanced. It causes elevated calcium levels in the blood and an overabundance of calcium in the urine. In more difficult situations, bone density will deteriorate, and kidney stones may occur.
Symptoms and measures to control hyperparathyroidism
Depression, muscle weakness, and exhaustion are some of the non-specific symptoms of hyperparathyroidism. These measures include avoiding calcium-rich meals, maintaining optimum hydration (fluid intake), and taking osteoporosis drugs.
Types of hyperparathyroidism
Hyperparathyroidism is classified into two types: primary and secondary. A parathyroid adenoma is the most frequent disease of the parathyroid glands and the cause of primary hyperparathyroidism. A parathyroid adenoma is a benign disorder in which one parathyroid gland grows in size and produces an excessive amount of PTH. In most cases, individuals are unaware of the adenoma until normal blood test results show an abnormally elevated calcium and PTH level. Primary hyperparathyroidism could be caused by hyperactivation of all parathyroid glands, a condition known as parathyroid hyperplasia.
Secondary hyperparathyroidism occurs when PTH secretion is triggered by a nonparathyroid illness, most commonly kidney failure.
Why is the procedure performed?
When calcium levels are high, there is a complication of hyperparathyroidism (such as kidney stones, osteoporosis, or bone fractures), or if the patient is young, a parathyroidectomy surgery in Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore is required. A high-resolution ultrasound or a nuclear medicine scan (called a sestamibi scan) might assist orient the approach either before or during surgery by pinpointing the location of the hyperactive, swollen gland. The surgeon carefully removes one or more of the small parathyroid glands during a parathyroidectomy.
In some cases, both sides of the neck are examined, and in others, a direct approach is taken via a minor incision (referred to as a minimally invasive parathyroidectomy). In some cases, the problematic gland cannot be loPTH levels obtained during parathyroidectomy help to ensure the effective resection of the abnormal gland by demonstrating a return of PTH levels to normal after suspected parathyroid adenoma is removed, whereas preoperative tests assist in determining hyperparathyroidism and direct the surgical approach. A PTH determination is acquired immediately prior to the resection and evaluated to a PTH determination obtained ten minutes after the resection using this procedure.
