The percutaneously inserted central catheter (PICC – a long, very thin, soft and flexible tube) is used when a baby needs intravenous fluids and medication for a long time, multiple times a day. However, if the PICC catheter or midline central catheter is unable to insert into the baby's veins, then the central line insertion procedure is performed.
The central venous line (CVL) is also a long, soft and flexible tube that is used to provide intravenous (IV) fluids, nutrition and medication when the PICC procedure is unsuccessful in the infant. The central venous line enables intravenous care for the baby for over a long period. Usually, the central venous line is placed at a centrally located vein in the child's chest, groyne or neck. Visit our neonatology hospital in Yeshwanthpur for the best treatment.
Why is the procedure performed?
When PICC and other methods for obtaining intravenous access are failed, then central line insertions come to the rescue. An ill or premature baby can benefit from the central venous line in many ways. The central line insertions procedure is performed under the following conditions:
For giving intravenous care and nutrition to the very sick child patient who can't absorb enough nutrition through normal digestion.
For giving long-term intravenous (within the vein) medicines and antibiotics.
For providing intravenous medicine for infants suffering from blood-related diseases like haemophilia (where blood doesn't clot normally, and a bleeding disorder is formed.
For treating infants suffering from kidney failure through haemodialysis. Here, the baby's blood is cleaned through large catheters that require special attention.
For chemotherapy during cancer treatment.
Pre-Procedure:
Our expert team of neonatal doctors at the Manipal Hospitals and highly trained paediatric interventional radiologists will perform the central venous line (CVL) insertion. Before performing the procedure, your child's doctor will take parental consent from you and explain the benefits and risks of the CVL insertion procedure. Your child will be made comfortable before the procedure is performed. Before the day of the procedure, you might be informed by your infant's doctor or nurse about the preoperative tests to be performed if required. Book an appointment to consult with the experts.
CVL Procedure:
CVL procedure is less painful as anaesthesia or sedative is given to the infant before the procedure.
Your child will be under supervision throughout the procedure, and a panel of experts such as paediatric interventional radiologists, anaesthesiologists, neonatal doctors, nurses, and other paediatric and neonatal experts will safely perform the procedure.
After finding the vein area through ultrasound, X-ray or fluoroscopy, it is secured, and the surrounding area is cleaned with a special cleaning liquid to keep the area sterile and clean by decreasing the infection chances.
A small incision is made, or a needle is inserted into the vein.
Now the catheter is placed inside at the right location.
The catheter might be secured by stitches, and a bandage is applied.
After procedure:
At Manipal Hospitals, your child is treated with care by certified neonatal experts. So, your baby is handled with care throughout the CVL procedure. Once the procedure is completed, your child is taken to the recovery room and kept under constant supervision. Unless no other treatment is required, your child will be sent home. Your baby's doctor will discuss the care to be taken for your child at home.
