Caesarean section (C-section) is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incisions made in the abdomen and uterus. A C-section is usually performed when normal delivery is not possible or safe due to some specific medical conditions.
When would a mother require a C-section?
A mother would require a C-section if there are certain medical conditions that can affect her or the baby’s health or if some complications arise while in labour in a normal delivery.
Why is the procedure performed?
Doctors might advise a C-section in some of the following cases:
Labour is not developing properly
One of the most common reasons why doctors opt for a C-section is if labour is not progressing (labour dystocia) properly and normally in the mother. It includes prolonged dilation or opening of the cervix or prolonged pushing after complete cervical dilation.
The baby is in distress
If the doctor notices changes in the baby's heartbeat they might opt for a C-section as it would be the safest option in the scenario.
The baby is in an unusual position
The doctor can advise a C-section to the mother if the baby is in an unusual position inside her, like if the baby’s feet or buttocks enter the birth canal first (breech) or the sides or shoulders enter first (transverse).
The mother is carrying more than one baby
The doctor usually recommends a C-section as the safest way of delivery, if the mother is carrying twins, triplets or more.
There's a problem with the Placenta
A doctor can also recommend a C-section for delivery, if there’s a condition where the placenta covers the opening of the cervix (placenta previa).
Prolapsed umbilical cord
The doctor can opt to perform a C-section if a portion of the umbilical cord slips in front of the baby through the cervix.
Health-related concerns
Doctors can also suggest a C-section for delivery if the mother is suffering from certain health complications, like a heart or brain condition.
A previous C-section or other surgery on the uterus
A doctor might recommend a C-section for safety reasons if the mother has had a previous C-section or any other surgery on the uterus.
Procedure
In the first step of a C-section procedure the mother is prepared for anaesthesia. The mother's abdomen is then sanitised with an antiseptic, and an oxygen mask may be placed over her mouth and nose so that more oxygen reaches the baby. The care provider will then wrap a sterile drape where the incision will be made, as well as over the legs and chest.
The gynaecologist then makes an incision through the skin and into the abdominal wall. They could opt to make a vertical or transverse incision. The gynaecologist will then make a 3- to 4-inch incision in the wall of your uterus.
The baby is delivered through the incisions. Once the doctor takes the baby out, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut and then the placenta is removed. The incisions are then closed with stitches and staples. Book an appointment at our Caesarean treatment hospital in Yeshwanthpur for the delivery.
