A dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a surgical procedure to open a blocked tear duct. The tear duct drains tears from the eye into the nose. A blocked tear duct can cause tears to build up in the eye and can lead to infections. During a DCR, the surgeon makes a small incision in the side of the nose. They then create a new opening between the tear duct and the nose. This allows the tears to drain properly and prevents them from building up in the eye. DCR is a safe and effective procedure that can improve the quality of life for people with a blocked tear duct. It is important to follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully after the procedure to ensure the best possible outcome.
Pre-Procedure
DCR (Dacryocystorhinostomy) is a surgical procedure that is performed to improve the drainage of tears from the eye. This surgery is usually performed when the tear ducts are blocked, and tears are not able to drain properly. Before having DCR surgery, your doctor will perform a complete eye examination. This examination will help to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the surgery. Your doctor will also ask about your medical history and any medications that you are currently taking. You will need to stop taking any blood thinners or other medications that could increase bleeding during surgery. You should also avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 8 hours before the surgery. Book an appointment to consult with the experts.
Procedure
A DCR is a surgical procedure to improve drainage from the eye by creating a new passage from the tear duct to the nose. The surgeon will make a small incision in the skin between the eye and nose, and then create a small tunnel through the bone to reach the tear duct. A silicone tube is then inserted into the tear duct to keep it open and allow for proper drainage. The incision is then closed with sutures. The surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours. Recovery time is usually about 2 weeks, during which time the patient will need to avoid strenuous activity and protect the incision from getting wet. After recovery, the silicone tube will need to be removed in a minor outpatient procedure.
Post-Procedure
After having a DCR (dacryocystorhinostomy), it is important to keep the incision (the cut made in your skin) clean and dry. You may shower 48 hours (about 2 days) after your surgery, but do not soak in a tub, go swimming, or use a hot tub until your doctor says it is okay.
To care for your incision, you will need to wash your hands well with soap and water before touching the incision. Gently clean the incision with mild soap and water. Do this every day. Put a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, on the incision. This will keep the incision from drying out. Put a clean, dry bandage over the incision. Change the bandage if it gets wet or dirty. You may have some drainage from your incision. This is normal. Place a gauze pad over the incision and tape it in place. Change the gauze pad when it gets wet or dirty. You may also have some bruising and swelling around your eye. Put a cold compress on your eye for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.
