What is an Allergy Test?
An allergy test is an examination conducted by a professional allergy expert to evaluate whether your body is susceptible to a certain substance. The examination might take the form of a blood test or a skin test.
The immune system is the body's natural protection mechanism. Allergies develop when your immune system responds inappropriately to anything in the surroundings.
Why Do Doctors Perform Allergy Tests?
If the patient experiences disturbing allergic symptoms, the healthcare professional performs an allergy test. Asthmatic patients are also subjected to allergy testing by doctors. The test can detect allergic triggers that can aggravate asthma symptoms or cause an asthma attack.
The patient may also require a test if experienced a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. This potentially fatal condition can induce hives or swelling, breathing difficulties, and a sudden drop in blood pressure, resulting in anaphylactic shock. The reason for a severe response is determined using the medical history as well as allergy tests.
When Does a Patient Need an Allergy Test?
If the patient is allergic to allergens in the air, such as pollen, dust, or animal dander, the patient may develop allergic rhinitis. Also called hay fever, this allergic reaction causes,
Watery, itchy eyes
Headaches
Congestion in the nose, sneezing, or a runny nose
Shortness of breath, wheezing, or a persistent cough
Throat ache
Food allergy symptoms normally appear within 30 minutes to 2 hours of intake. Food allergies can cause the following symptoms,
Hives, swelling of the cheeks, lips, or tongue, and itching.
Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest or throat tightness. These are respiratory allergy symptoms.
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, stomach discomfort and cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.
A pale complexion, a slow pulse, headache, or breathlessness are all indications of cardiovascular disease.
Contact dermatitis can occur in people who are sensitive to latex, perfumes, or metals such as nickel. The skin is affected by this allergic response. You may experience,
skin burning or blisters.
Itching and swelling
Itchy skin or a skin rash
A dermatologist's patch test is used to diagnose various sorts of responses.
The Types of Allergy Tests
There are different ways to test for allergies. Your doctor will select the best method based on your symptoms and the suspected allergens. These tests include,
Skin Prick Test
The doctor pricks the skin on your forearm or back with a small needle containing 10 to 50 different possible allergies. Alternatively, they may put droplets of suspected allergens on your skin and then use a device to scrape and softly pierce the area, allowing the liquid to penetrate your skin. Redness is a common reaction that occurs within 15 minutes after contact. A rash or elevated, circular bumps known as wheals might be your reaction. This test looks for allergies to airborne particles, foods, and penicillin.
Patch Test
The purpose of this test is to identify the cause of contact dermatitis. The physician applies allergen drops to the skin on your arm and wraps it in a bandage. Alternatively, the physician may apply an allergen-containing patch. The patient wears the bandage for 48 to 96 hours before returning to the doctor's office. The bandage is then removed by the physician to inspect the rash on the skin or other response. Visit Manipal Hospitals for Allergy Testing in Yeshwanthpur.
