Paediatric Urology in the medical field is a subspecialty in surgery that manages and deals with urology issues in children. It also includes the treatment of congenital disorders of the genitourinary tract in children, infants, as well as adolescents. Paediatric urologists are medical professionals who diagnose, treat, and manage urinary and genital disorders in children.
Paediatric urological problems comprise a wide range of conditions that can affect the child's regular functioning of the genital and urinary tract. These can be congenital - present at the time of birth or can develop suddenly in childhood. Even with the smallest hint of paediatric urological issues in infants or children, we recommend getting the diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible by a paediatric urologist.

Some common Urological conditions present in infants and children are -
Infants and children often tend to face urological disorders, and the following are a few conditions found mostly in infants and children:
Antenatal hydronephrosis - This condition is typically diagnosed during a prenatal ultrasound/sonogram. In this condition, the foetus' kidneys contain some kind of fluid that makes them inflamed, resulting in structural abnormality.
Umbilical Hernia - This condition usually occurs in infants who are less than 6 months old. One can notice swelling near the navel/belly button of the baby. The condition occurs as the intestines bulge through a weak abdominal structure around this area.
Hydrocele –Under normal circumstances, the testes come down to the scrotum through a tube that gets closed. However, sometimes, the tube does not close and stays open, resulting in fluid entering the scrotum from the abdomen. It results in swelling, which is discomforting and painful.
Hydronephrosis – In this condition, urine does not drain out of the kidneys due to a barrier in the urinary tract. It could occur in either one or both kidneys. The build-up of urine leads to enlarged kidneys, which can be hazardous.
Hypospadias: This condition is a birth anomaly in which the urethral opening is present under the tip of the penis.
Dysuria: This condition causes burning, pain, and a discomforting sensation while passing urine due to an injury, neurologic condition, or urinary tract infection.
Pyuria: Pus is present in the urine in this condition.
Nocturnal enuresis (Bedwetting): This condition is present in around 10-15% of children.
Undescended testes: This condition occurs when one or both testes do not come down into the scrotum from the abdominal cavity in unborn babies.
Ureteropelvic junction obstruction is the obstruction of the junction where the ureteral tubes meet the kidneys. This junction is the passage for the urine flow from the kidneys to the bladder, ureters, and then out.
One must consult a paediatric urologist to discuss the symptoms and get the correct diagnosis, best treatment, and management for their children.
